A lot of associations run into a common occurrence of “Board Fatigue”due to a lack of candidates for the Board of Directors, Trustees or Officer positions. Associations can’t move forward and progress if the same ol’ board members and officers are managing the association year after year. Here are some best practices to recruit candidates for your board and officers.
Best Practices for Recruiting Candidates
Ask for recommendations!
Recruiting candidates is easier than you think when you already have a gigantic pool of prospects to seek recommendations out from. Reach out to your current board, officers, and staff, your active donors and volunteers, and your members. Let them know their feedback and recommendations are welcome and appreciated. Surely they know other people in the industry or from another organization who is just the right fit for that position! You’ll never know if you don’t ask!
Utilize the social tools at hand! Reach out to your social audience on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn to request recommendations. Another tool that may of helpful while trying to recruit candidates is LinkedIn’s Board Connect. The Board Connect lets you post opportunities, search for candidates who fit certain criteria, and search for people who are looking for board service.
Utilize your Election:
Who better to ask than an already active and engaged member!? Election-America can include a write-in space on your ballots for voters to write in their recommendations for future Board/Officer/Leadership candidates. A number of our partners have begun including leadership recommendations on their ballot and have seen great responses.
With Nominations Central™, your members can easily nominate someone who is not yet running in the election. They can simply enter an email address, and that person will receive an email notification indicating that they have been nominated.
